Thoughts on Marriage
Marriage is a gift from God...a miracle. It is an opportunity to feel the joy of
taking care of someone who takes care of you, to be challenged towards
growth yet gently nurtured, to love deeply and to receive it in return. It is
about trust, friendship and having a partner to share all life has to offer. It
is a commitment to participate in the process of mutual evolution,
understanding and forgiveness. It is indeed a sacred union to be treated
with reverence.
Marriage is not a place to hide from the world. It is a safe place to grow and
become wiser. It is a place to grow into better people, so that you can go
out into the world and make a difference by spreading the joy and wisdom
that you have found with each other. Together in marriage, you shall
contribute more fully, for both of you shall be more full.
_________, ________is a gift to you from God, but he is not a gift to you
alone. It is God's will that in your love, this man might find within himself a
greater sense of who he is meant to be. You are asked to see the good in
this man, to accept him for who he is and who he shall be. In this way,
God's purpose shall be accomplished in this relationship. May this man find
the kingdom of heaven through the love you share.
And so it is with you also ________, that although ________ is a gift to
you, she is not a gift intended for you alone. You are asked by God to so
love this woman, that in your love she might find herself as God has
created her, so beautiful and strong and brave and true, that the entire
world might be blessed by the presence of a woman who shines so. May
she relax in your arms as she has never relaxed before. May she know,
from now on, that there is one on whose love she can depend on forever.
May you both create, with God, a piece of heaven on earth.
The Vows
________, do you take, _______ to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have
and to hold, to love and to cherish, through times of sorrow as well as joy?
Do you promise this with all your heart, mind, body and soul, and before
God commit to honor this vow all the days of your life? If so, please
answer, I do
________, do you take, _______ to be your lawfully wedded husband, to
have and to hold, to love and to cherish, through times of sorrow as well as
joy? Do you promise this with all your heart, mind, body and soul, and
before God commit to honor this vow all the days of your life? If so, please
answer, I do
The Rings
You have chosen to give each other rings as an expression of your
marriage vows today. They are the outward visible sign of your
commitment to each other. Your rings announce to the world that you are
pledged and devoted to a deep and abiding love with another.
As God is a circle whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is
nowhere, so let the seamless circle of these rings become the symbol of
your endless love. We ask God to bless these rings as your union is
blessed! May you wear them in peace and happiness all of your days.
Amen
Please repeat after me:
________, this ring is a sign from my heart, that I will cherish and honor you
from this day forward as my husband/wife. I place this ring on your hand so
that you may remember forever that I chose you above all others. I give
you this ring as a sign of my love.
Pronouncement
And so now, inasmuch, as you, ________, and you ________, have
announced the truths that are already written within your hearts, we
observe joyfully that you have declared yourselves to be husband and wife
The Kiss
Closing Prayer (Optional)
Will everyone please join in prayer as we fill ourselves with good intentions,
hopes, prayers and good wishes for ________ and _______.
Let us pray:
_______ and _______ you are now joined in one unbroken circle.
Wherever you go, may you always return to one another in your
togetherness. May you both find in each other the love for which all men
and women long. May you grow in understanding and compassion. May
the home that you establish be such a place of sanctuary that all who visit
will find there a friend. And may the Lord bless you and keep you
